How to avail ABIS:
If you wish to avail ABIS, simply send your request with your research
tropic or key word to the Director, SAIC, at the following e-mail address:
abis@saic-dhaka.org
Please mention the subject descriptors or keywords on which you need
bibliographic references. You may also mention title of the CD-ROM database
from which you need references. Also mention the range of years / period
for which you need references. SAIC will search relevant CD-ROM databases
based on your request and forward search results to you through e-mail. If
you are not sure about the keywords or subject descriptors, please send
full title of your research topic so that we will take trouble to search
the relevant references from the relevant database(s).
Please note that ABIS operates only through e-mail. SAIC will not respond
to postal queries.
About SAIC
SAARC Agricultural Information Centre (SAIC) is the first SAARC Regional
Centre established in 1988 at Dhaka, Bangladesh with the following objectives:
- Establish regional information network on agriculture and allied
discipline.
- Identify and document agricultural and pertinent literature
including forestry, fisheries, livestock and allied disciplines.
- Serve the agricultural information needs of the member countries.
- Promote new and better techniques for handling and dissemination of
the technologies and information.
- Collection of information and dissemination of the same in the area
of proven agricultural technologies and dissemination of the information on
effective farm practices and development as well as introduction of
emerging new and frontier technologies.
Agricultural Bibliographic Information Service (ABIS)
SAIC understands that the need for review of the literature is crucial to
move forward in agricultural research and development. SAIC always strives
to update the knowledge of agricultural researchers, extensionists,
educators, students in the SAARC member countries through dissemination of
information. Agricultural Bibliographic Information Service (ABIS) is one
such effort which is intended to help agricultural researchers of SAARC
member countries to find bibliographic research findings from a variety of
major CD-ROM databases in the world.
ABIS is available free of cost to people who work for agricultural research
and development organizations, training institutions, agricultural
universities and educational institutions in the SAARC member countries.
CD-ROM Databases Available
Realising the needs of researchers, SAIC has developed a rich collection of
bibliographic CD-ROM databases in the field of agriculture and allied
subject areas. Following are the salient features of important CD-ROM
databases available with SAIC:
AGRICOLA (1970 - 2006)
It offers vital agricultural information from 1970 to the present. It
contains over 3.7 million citations to journal articles, monographs,
theses, patents, software, audiovisual materials, and technical reports
related to agriculture. These records describe publications and resources
encompassing all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including
animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry,
aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural
economics and earth and environmental sciences.
CAB Abstracts (1990 - 2005)
It is the largest database covering international issues in agriculture,
forestry, and allied disciplines in the life sciences. The database
contains over 4 million records from over 11,000 journals. Books,
conferences, reports, and other kinds of literature published
internationally. Subjects covered include animal and crop husbandry, animal
and plant breeding, plant protection, genetics, forestry, engineering,
economics, veterinary medicine, human nutrition, and rural development.
Crop Science Database (1973 - 2006) (formerly CROPCD)
It provides access to international scientific literature relating to field
crops, fodder crops, and grasslands. It covers such diverse subject areas
as agronomy, botany, physiology, biochemistry, field production, farming
systems, and more. Cereals, legumes, root crops, fiber plants, oilseed
plants, tobacco, sugarcane and other items are covered in detail. Crop
Science Database contains more than 700,000 abstracts and citations, with
25,000 records added annually. Containing over 30 years of research from
over 75 countries.
Forest Science Database (1972 - 2004) (formerly TREECD)
It is the world's leading bibliographic database for forest, wood science
and agroforestry research. It contains more than 675,000 abstracts and
citations, with 20,000 records added annually. Containing over 60 years of
research from over 75 countries the Forest Science Database provides an
ideal source for foresters, scientists, environmental consultants, policy
makers and others actively involved in research or decision-making in
agroforestry, forestry, wood science, and the forest and timber industries.
Food Science & Technology Abstracts (1990 – 2005) (formerly FSTA)
It is an extensive collection of abstracts prepared from the world's food
science, food technology and food-related human nutrition literature. It

reports, theses, standards, and legislation to create comprehensive
summaries. These summaries provide a quick and easy way for busy food
professionals to keep up to date with new developments and research in the
food community focusing on every stage of the food chain. With over 600,000
bibliographic records from 1969 to date, FSTA can help develop new ideas
and products, structure your research program, plan your export market,
solve your manufacturing problems and protect your profits.
Horticultural Science Database (1973 - 2003) (formerly HORTICD)
