About us

On 8th September 1994, Hon'ble Supreme Court directed Govt. of Bihar to notify RMA as autonomous institute. It also framed the RMA rules and constituted Management Committee for administrative and financial management of RMA. Supreme Court vide its order dated 11-11-1997 entrusted National Human Rights Commission (NHRC ) to monitor and supervise the functioning of RMA. On 10th January 1998 the name of RMA was changed to Ranchi Institute of Neuro-Psychiatry & Allied Sciences ( RINPAS ). Academic courses were introduced by Prof. ( Dr. )K.R. Banerjee in July 2000. With the support of State Govt. and close monitoring by NHRC, RINPAS is now gradually showing upward trend in the care of people with mental health problems by improving the quality assurance, rehabilitation, community outreach programme, teaching and research activities.

The Institute has regular M.Phil and Ph.D. courses in Clinical Psychology and Psychiatric Social Work, M.D. and D.P.M. in Psychiatry and D.P.N. in Psychiatric Nursing ( affiliated to Ranchi University ). The Institute is Actively involved in Research activities. Research papers related to mental health have been published in various national and international Journals. The Institute is a recognized teaching centre for M.B.B.S. students who are posted here from different medical colleges of Jharkhand and Bihar in different batches for psychiatry training. Visiting students also get training in the Department of Clinical Psychology, Psychiatric Social Work and Psychiatric Nursing.

The institute has liaison with Central Institute of Psychiatry, Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, Gujrat Forensic University, LGB Regional Institute of Mental Health, Tezpur, Department of Psychology and Department of Applied Psychology, Calcutta University, Kolkata, NIMHANS Bangalore, Institute of Behavioral Sciences, Raipur and RIMS Manipal for academic , research and clinical activities. Services of Psychiatrists, clinical psychologist, psychiatric social worker, physician, eye specialist, specialist in tropical medicine and dentist are also available. Psychological testing, psychological and psycho-social management, family counseling are available. Pathological examination and other investigation facilities are available in the OPD complex. Physiotherapy unit is also located in the OPD Complex. The Institute runs satellite clinic at Jonha, Khunti, Saraikela Kharsaon and Hazaribagh on 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Tuesday respectively. The team also goes to L.N.J.N. Central Jail, Hazaribagh once a month and to Birsa Central Jail, Ranchi and Nirmal Hirday and Chesier Home, Ranchi once a fortnight. NGO's like Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra and Sanjeevini Gram Trust are helping in identification of patients and their follow-up.

The Institute is the nodal point for District Mental Health Programme. The DMHP is being run in Dumka, Gumla, Daltonganj and Jamshedpur districts. The Institute is running Tribal Mental Health Programme at Gumla in collaboration with Melbourne University , Australia and funded through Jharkhand State Govt. under NRHM, Govt. of India, Saksham Project under GFATM ( Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria ), Helpline (UMANG) in collaboration with Dept. of Social Justice, Women and Child Welfare, Govt. of Jharkhand to extend services particularly for adolescent girls (Funded by Dept. of Social Justice, Women and Child Welfare, Govt. of Jharkhand ), and Legal Aid Cell in collaboration with Jharkhand High Court.
